In Orleans, Beauty is a gift. A gift that only the Belles can wield. All others in the kingdom are born “damned”, cursed to be grey. That is, unless they can afford the services of a Belle, like Camellia. Not only is she a Belle, but one of the most skilled of her generation. She wants to be chosen to work for the Queen, to be known as the Favourite. There’s one problem. Being the queen’s Belle means working on the younger princess. The same princess who is known for the horrible things she does to those around her. When the Queen asks Camellia to risk her life for the life of her elder daughter, she must make an impossible decision. This story sweeps you up and reels you in from the start. It has the feel of a modern fairytale, but will bring you to question what you believe. A true modern masterpiece!

If you haven’t read the first in this series (Crimson Lake) do yourself a favour and listen to the audio book narrated by Euan Morton. That got me hooked , and now I can’t get enough of Ted Conkaffey, who isn’t the bad guy everyone thinks he is & the just plain crazy Amanda Pharrel.

Bleak, cold and brooding Iceland is the setting for all of Ragnar Jonasson’s mystery and thriller novels. Currently writing two different series, his stories have quickly become global bestsellers with vivid descriptions of the dark events that can take place in the desolate North Atlantic. Gritty crimes with realistic characters make each of his novels a gripping read. Jonasson is yet another great Nordic noir author alongside the likes of Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, Henning Mankell and Anne Holt.

I usually borrow Debbie Macomber books as Audiobooks. It’s like going for a drive with a gossipy friend who knows heaps of peoples and hearing stories of what they have been up to. Her books are generally set in small communities in North America and commonly have romantic elements. I find them undemanding and relatively enjoyable. I suggest you start with the “Cedar Cove” series.

How do you write a book review on absolute perfection? I finished this book and then I wanted to read it again because of all this cuteness overload. This book made me laugh and cry with all my heart and made me so happy by the end of it. Albertalli writes with this beautiful lightness that is almost impossible not to love.
